Switching Power Supplies & Uninterruptible Power Supplies

Switching Power Supplies &
Uninterruptible Power Supplies
Electrical drive and control
| Application Introduction
In switching power supplies or uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), the primary sources of internal heat include switching transistors (MOSFETs), rectifier diodes, and magnetic components. When the power supply is overloaded, has poor heat dissipation, or operates in high ambient temperatures, the temperature of these components can rise sharply, affecting the power supply's efficiency and safety.
Temperature sensors act as "thermometers" and "guardians" for critical components, providing real-time monitoring and protection.

Electrical terminal structure
Temperature monitoring and protection for power components and magnetic elements are essential to prevent thermal breakdown of heat-prone devices, which could disrupt normal circuit operation. Terminal-mounted sensors are typically used by fastening them to the heat sinks of switching transistors or the cores of transformers.

Epoxy encapsulated temperature sensor
Real-time temperature monitoring enables intelligent fan speed regulation, which is key to achieving quiet operation and high energy efficiency. This technology is commonly used in high-power-density applications such as desktop computer power supplies, server power supplies, and telecommunications power systems. Typically, epoxy-encapsulated temperature sensors monitor the internal temperature of the power supply, while the controller uses this feedback to dynamically adjust the fan speed for optimal cooling.

Metal bullet head temperature sensor
Clip+Metal Head
High-power systems (e.g., ultra-fast charging piles, super servers) utilize dedicated liquid cooling circulation loops to achieve efficient heat dissipation through coolant flow. Temperature sensors are deployed at both the inlet and outlet ports of the loop to monitor liquid temperature. Based on sensor feedback, the system controls the speed of water or oil pumps to regulate coolant flow rate, enabling precise and efficient thermal management. Metal bullet-head temperature sensors or Clip+ metal probe sensors are typically used for this application.

NTCPower Thermistor
PTCPower Thermistor
The core of a switching power supply lies in its power switching transistors (such as MOSFETs or IGBTs), which have a limited current-carrying capacity. In the event of a short circuit or severe overload, the current can surge dramatically, far exceeding the rated current of the switching devices. An NTC thermistor connected in series within the circuit provides high resistance in its cold state to limit the current. In such applications, either a PTC or NTC can be used for coordination.
